Hands Down Diving was created to make scuba travel more welcoming, more connected, and more accessible through sign language.
As a New York City–based dive community, American Sign Language (ASL) is the language you'll see most often on our adventures. However, our community includes people from many different signing backgrounds, and we encourage everyone to learn and use the local sign language(s) wherever we travel. We believe that making the effort to communicate with the local Deaf community is one of the best ways to truly experience a destination. Our goal is to bring Deaf, hard of hearing, signing, and hearing divers together to explore incredible places while building friendships that last long after the trip is over. Some adventures are organized specifically for the Hands Down Diving community, while others allow us to join larger expeditions led by trusted dive shops, resorts, instructors, and experienced guides around the world. No matter who organizes the adventure, our mission stays the same: to create unforgettable dive experiences where communication, community, and adventure come first. After all… why stop communicating once we descend? 🤟
